RELASI AGAMA DAN SAINS DALAM EMPAT LEVEL ONTOLOGI

Kesatuan Agama dan Sains
Dalam periode awal Islam, agama dan sains, baik dalam tradisi tekstual maupun kontekstual itu manunggal. Tidak terpisah. Ini dapat dilihat dalam dua bukti.
Pertama, Quran yang menjadi referensi utama pengetahuan, itu isinya agama sekaligus sains. Yang kami maksud agama disini adalah pengetahuan tentang wujud “metafisika”, dengan Tuhan sebagai realitas puncak (Wajibul Wujud/Necessarily Existent). Inti agama memang itu. Agama dibangun dari keyakinan kepada ontologi, being, objek atau wujud metafisis (i.e., Allah, malaikat, kitab, rasul, hari akhir, dan takdir/keadilan ilahi). Disisi lain; Quran juga berisi ayat, petunjuk atau hukum-hukum (sains) yang menguasai alam semesta. Quran adalah kitab metafisika sekaligus fisika.
Kedua, tidak hanya teks kitab yang punya konten mendalam tentang sains, dalam praktiknya juga begitu. Hanya beberapa waktu setelah era Muhammad SAW, pengkajian sains dan inovasi melonjak pesat. Selain karena spirit “iqrak”, ini juga tidak terlepas dari kemampuan menggali kembali dokumen-dokumen sains dan filsafat Yunani; yang ditranslasi, diuji dan dikembangkan lebih jauh oleh para ilmuan muslim.
Bahkan, karena agama dan sains itu tunggal, islamic schoolars era awal itu rata-rata ahli keduanya. Selain jago ilmu-ilmu “dunia” (sains), juga memiliki karya-karya mendalam di bidang “ukhrawi” (spiritual). Sebut saja Jabir bin Hayyan (721-815 M), Al-Khawarizmi (780-850 M), Al-Farabi (872-951 M), Al-Zahrawi (936-1013), Ibnu Sina (980-1057 M), Ibnu Haytham (965-1040 M) dan mungkin ratusan world class schoolars lainnya sampai abad 15 menjelang kebangkitan Eropa.
Nama terakhir, Ibnu Haytham atau di barat populer sebagai Alhazen, sering kami sebutkan dalam beberapa artikel terakhir, karena “metode saintifik” (penulisan 5 bab dalam karya ilmiah moderen) merupakan warisan darinya, yang sebenarnya diadopsi dari metode metafisika Islam yang diperkenalkan para nabi disepanjang zaman.

Kita tidak akan membahas semua tokoh itu. Ambil satu sample saja. Ibnu Sina (Avicenna), bapak kedokteran moderen. Karyanya Qanun fi al-Tibb (Canon of Medicine) menjadi rujukan sains kedokteran selama 5 abad. Praktik-praktik pengobatannya menjadi inspirasi sampai sekarang. Sementara Asy-Syifa menjadi buku filsafat penting tentang ketuhanan, fisika, etika, matematika, dan logika.
Selain hafiz sejak usia 10 tahun ini, Avicenna juga ahli puisi. Pandangan ontologisnya tentang dunia ruhiyah (metafisik) juga dahsyat sekali. Ia memang seorang yang memiliki pengalaman-pengalaman spiritual kelas tinggi. Pandangan-pandangan mukasyafahnya diramu dalam resume yang sangat filosofis. Banyak karyanya dalam berbagai bidang ilmu. Total mencapai 250, dalam bentuk buku ataupun risalah. Karena keahliannya, ia digelar Al-Shaikh Al-Rais (The Leader Among Wisemen), Hujjat Al-Haqq (The Proof of God) dan Amir Al-Attibba’ (The Prince of Physicians). Gelar-gelar ini menunjukkan bahwa ia memang seorang ahli dunia (fisika) sekaligus akhirat (metafisika); ilmuwan sekaligus ulama.
Figur Ibnu Sina dan lainnya merupakan gambaran “kesatuan” agama dan sains dalam diri seseorang. Kalau merujuk ke era Islam klasik, ilmuan itu ibarat “ensiklopedia” yang “multi-perspektif”. Mereka menguasai metodologi ilmu-ilmu sosial dan fisika, sekaligus metafisika. Mereka menguasi dunia, sekaligus akhirat. Mereka memahami sains, sekaligus sangat mengenal/akrab dengan Tuhannya. Hal inilah yang terasa hilang dari bangunan pengetahuan kita hari ini. Mengapa?
Pemisahan Agama dan Sains
Hari ini, pengetahuan agama dan sains seperti terbelah. Sebuah universitas biasanya hanya terdiri dari fakultas ilmu-ilmu ‘dunia’ (ekonomi, kedokteran, teknik, hukum dan lainnya). Untuk urusan berbau agama dan ketuhanan, itu harus dicari di luar itu. Pemisahan ilmu ‘dunia’ dari ilmu akhirat terjadi bukan karena sebatas alasan “spesialisasi”. Tetapi lebih sebagai “sekularisasi”. Sains dan agama dipersepsikan sebagai dua ruang terpisah.
Cara pandang dikotomis antara agama (metafisika) dan sains (fisika) yang telah mengakar dalam sistem pendidikan kita. Kalau diselidiki, ini tidak terlepas dari pengaruh revolusi di Eropa yang terjadi sejak abad 14 sampai 17. Pada periode itu, Eropa mulai beralih dari abad pertengahan ke abad moderen. Mereka menyebut masa-masa ini sebagai “renaisance” (masa pembaharuan). Terjadi perubahan sosial besar pada fase ini. Masyarakat bergerak meninggalkan masa lalu yang gelap, yang mereka sebut sebagai Dark Ages (abad 5-15 M).
Masa lalu mereka adalah “agama”. Agama dianggap sebagai biang kemunduran. Gara-gara gereja, mereka selama 1000 tahun terjebak dalam doktrin-doktrin keimanan yang tidak mencerahkan. Agama menghalangi mereka berfikir dan menelaah alam secara kritis dan rasional. Agama melarang mereka menyimpulkan sesuatu yang bertentangan dengan dalil yang sudah ada. Dalil-dalil agama seperti tidak boleh diuji lagi. Nicolaus Copernicus misalnya, dihukum mati gegara menyebut matahari sebagai pusat tata surya. Akibatnya, Kristen ditinggalkan secara besar-besaran, dipisahkan dari semua bidang kehidupan dan pengetahuan.
Eropa akhirnya maju setelah meninggalkan agama yang mereka anggap tidak faktual. Sistem edukasi dan pengetahuan dirancang kembali. Selain mengutip kembali berbagai teks Yunani yang kaya sumber inspirasi, sejak abad 12 juga telah dimulai proses adopsi dan penerjemahan sains karya para filsuf dan ilmuan muslim. Semua itu di kemas dalam struktur pengetahuan baru yang sekuler: agama dipisahkan dari sains. Ini sesuatu yang selama 1000 tahun tidak terjadi dalam masa islamic golden ages (abad 6-15 M).
Ketika Eropa menjajah dunia Islam, sistem edukasi inilah yang diperkenalkan. Disamping mereka juga melemahkan institusi agama, karena menjadi pusat-pusat ideologi perlawanan. Sebagai gantinya, lahirlah sekolah dan universitas-universitas baru yang berfokus pada penggalian pengetahuan pada dimensi material saja. Lahirlah kebanggaan baru, bahwa ontologi fisik (materi) merupakan satu-satunya objek pengetahuan yang pantas diteliti. Selebihnya, apa yang disebut “metafisik” adalah dimensi tahayul dan khurafat; atau sesuatu yang tidak pantas diketahui dan hanya akan membuat kita ketinggalan zaman.
Berkembangnya filsafat materialisme sebagai buah dari renaisans juga memperkuat sekularisme dalam dunia pendidikan. Benih materialisme sudah ada sejak zaman Epikuros (341-270 SM) ataupun Demokritos (460-370 SM) di Yunani kuno. Di awal abad 18, mazhab atomic ini dipertajam kembali oleh La Mettrie dan Baron d’Holbach. Lalu dilanjutkan oleh para filsuf Jerman abad 19 seperti Feuerbach, Moleschott, Buchner, dan Haeckel; sampai bangunan ateisme menjadi kokoh.
Dalam era keterjajahan, mayoritas muslim memang tetap meyakini keberadaan agama dan dunia immaterial (Tuhan, malaikat, dan esensi ruhiyah lainnya). Hanya saja, epistemologi atau cara memperoleh pengetahuan tentang itu sudah dipisah dari kurikulum sekolah. Hal-hal metafisis dianggap bukan lagi sains yang dapat memajukan kehidupan. Percaya dan terlalu serius dengan hal-hal itu dianggap sesuatu yang tradisional, tidak relevan dengan kemajuan zaman. Kaum ruhaniawan diisolir dari kemoderenan. Dipaksa pindah ke gunung dan pinggir-pinggir hutan.
Karena itu, tarikat dan sufisme (studi terhadap hal-hal gaib/ontologi non-materi) dianggap biang kemunduran umat. Munculnya dinasti Saud bersama wahabismenya di abad 18, sampai lahirnya negara Saudi atas prakarsa Inggris pada awal abad 20 juga ditujukan untuk mengucilkan tradisi spiritual yang sangat esensial dalam Islam ini. Semua pusat inkubasi metafisis spiritual di kota Mekkah dihancurkan. Sejak saat itu, Islam mengalami masa kegelapan. Penjajahan tidak hanya membuat kita tertinggal secara sains, tapi juga spiritual.
Nabi dan Sufi, Kumpulan Researchers Wujud Tuhan
Saat Eropa hidup 1000 tahun dalam abad kegelapan (5-15 masehi), itulah abad kemunculan dan kegemilangan Islam dalam bidang metafisika yang dilanjutkan oleh sains sosial dan fisika. Munculnya Muhammad SAW pada abad ke 6 M memperkuat kembali tonggak pengetahuan metafisika yang pernah diperkenalkan para spiritual researchers (nabi-nabi) terdahulu, sejak Adam as sampai Isa as.
Muhammad termasuk manusia baru, yang hadir memperkenalkan diri sebagai utusan Tuhan. Dia mengaku telah berjumpa (wushul) dengan Tuhan. Dia mengaku dapat berkomunikasi dengan-Nya, juga dengan para malaikat-Nya. Apa tidak ngeri ngeri membuat pengakuan seperti itu. Padahal dia hanya manusia biasa seperti yang lainnya yang hidup di akhir zaman. Makanya, ia sampai dituduh gila dan dikucilkan. Tapi daya juangnya sangat kuat. Ia mampu meyakinkan banyak orang.
Bagi para sufi dan ilmuan metafisika, apa yang dialami Muhammad bin Abdullah itu bukan hal baru. Melainkan sesuatu yang pernah dialami para pendahulunya. Ada sekitar 124.000 orang (atau tercatat 25 orang dalam Quran) yang punya kemampuan metodologis serupa dengan Muhammad. Mereka semua adalah orang-orang yang sejak zaman kuno sampai akhir zaman, masih punya kecerdasan untuk “berjumpa” Tuhan.
Artinya, kemampuan mengobservasi (‘melihat’) Tuhan adalah pengalaman empiris yang sudah ada sejak era awal manusia. Itu sesuatu yang dapat direplika secara berulang-ulang, disetiap tempat dan zaman. Oleh berbagai suku dan bangsa. Artinya, ini memang sesuatu yang ilmiah. Buktinya, para nabi melakoni prosedur dalam langkah-langkah yang teratur dan sistematis, sangat metodologis (i.e., berkhalwat dsb), sehingga bisa beririsan dengan berbagai wujud ontologi pada dimensi ketuhanan.
Kesimpulannya, dunia metafisika kenabian adalah sesuatu yang ilmiah, bisa diriset berulang-ulang. Hanya saja perlu ditelusuri, metodologi apa yang digunakan untuk mengakses alam immaterial. Dalam Islam diyakini, Muhammad SAW telah mewarisi metode “rahasia” itu kepada sejumlah penerus sanad keilmuan.
Empat Hirarki Ontologi
Nabi Muhammad SAW tidak berfokus pada pengembangan sains dalam 63 perjalanan hidup, atau 23 tahun kenabian. Ia tidak memposisikan diri sebagai saintis murni. Dalam artian, Beliau tidak membuat temuan-temuan bersifat teknologikal kepada masyarakatnya. Namun, “karya” yang Beliau bawa (Quran), menjadi rujukan para saintis di sepanjang zaman. Agak aneh. Dia bukan saintis. Tapi punya ‘karya’ yang menjadi rujukan para saintis sesudahnya. Kenapa bisa demikian?
Karena, Muhammad sudah bermain pada ontologi tertinggi yang melampaui alam fisika. Ketika seseorang telah mampu mencapai dimensi metafisika, dimensi fisika menjadi terbuka. Semua pengetahuan alam (fisika) yang ada dalam Quran, diperoleh ketika Beliau telah mencapai kedudukan sebagai ahli metafisika. Artinya, metafisika memiliki hirarki lebih tinggi dalam ontologi wujud. Kalau digambarkan, yang tertinggi adalah ontologi metafisika, kemudian ontologi filosofis, dan kemudian baru ontologi fisika:
Ontologi Metafisika (Tuhan/Ruh) –> Ontologi Filosofis (Ide/Konsep/Abstraksi Mental) –> Ontologi Fisika (Alam Materi)
Pertama, ontologi metafisika (Tuhan/Ruh). Tuhan merupakan ontologi tertinggi, Causa Prima, Penggerak Awal, Realitas Absolut, penyebab segala sesuatu terjadi di bawahnya. Karena itulah, para nabi memilih bermain para wilayah tertinggi ini. Mereka menjadi ahli di bidang yang meliputi semua wujud. Orang-orang ini digambarkan berada di puncak pohon sidrah al-muntaha, yang menguasai semua elemen pengetahuan di bawahnya. Karena itu pula, Nabi hadir untuk melatih manusia pada kecerdasan metafisis ini, agar kita semua bisa dekat dengan Allah SWT.
Karena kemunculan nabi dan orang-orang sejenisnya (para wali), Tuhan dapat dikonfirmasi keberadaannya dan masih bisa diajak bicara. Sehingga agama kembali menjadi relevan, dan manusia menemukan hakikat tujuan hidupnya. Nabi menguasai metodologi untuk berinteraksi dengan Allah. Ilmu untuk “mengobservasi” Allah dipercaya telah ia wariskan secara khusus kepada sejumlah ahli ilmunya di berbagai tariqah.
Para ilmuan muslim dimasa kegemilangan Islam (abad 8-14 M), kalau kita baca karya-karya spiritualnya, terasa sekali bahwa mereka memang orang-orang yang mewarisi metode ini dari nabi. Kalau ditelusuri, selain berprofesi sebagai saintis dan fuqaha, kebanyakan mereka juga penempuh jalan spiritual/tarikat tertentu. Makanya, karya-karya sufistiknya agung sekali. Bahkan menjadi mata air pengetahuan yang tidak habis-habisnya untuk dikaji sampai sekarang. Sebutlah diantaranya Al-Ghazali (1058-1111 M), Ibnu Arabi (1165-1240 M), Jalaluddin Rumi (1207-1273 M) dan Mulla Shadra (1572-1640 M).
Kedua, ontologi rasio (intelek/abstraksi ide). Adalah alam ide, konsep atau filosofi. Dia eksis di alam mental setiap manusia. Manusia adalah makhluk berakal. Kemampuan berfikir logis adalah bawaan lahir kita. Salah satunya matematik. Misalnya, 1 dibagi 99 hasilnya 0,01 (angka 0,01 itu hanya ada dan benar dalam teori, tidak bisa dibuktikan dalam realitas fisik. Tidak mungkin kita mendapati sebuah mangga yang berjumlah 0,01). Oleh sebab itu, ilmu seperti matematik menjadi filsafat penting (“ibu dari ilmu”). Konsep-konsepnya yang logis membantu kita memahami/mengukur realitas lainnya termasuk realitas fisik dan optik.
Selain matematik, akal adalah ontologi yang juga punya karakter logis dalam menalar sesuatu dalam realitas konseptual. Baik Tuhan maupun fenomena wujud fisik di alam dapat dipahami dengan adanya elemen rasio. Karenanya, ontologi ini menjadi perangkat penting yang integral dalam diri seseorang. Sebab itu menjadi sesuatu yang membuat manusia menjadi manusia (mampu berfikir). Untuk itu, kami menempatkan ontologi ini pada posisi kedua setelah metafisik.
Ketiga, ontologi fisik (materi). Adalah realitas materi (atom) yang ada di tengah alam dan masyarakat (sosial). Semua unsur materi bisa diketahui, diukur, diuji, diobservasi, dideteksi, diakses, atau dipahami melalui metode riset tertentu. Tentu dengan menggunakan perangkat-perangkat inderawi. Jadi, sebuah fenomena di alam, bisa diakses melalui fakultas indera, lalu dianalisis melalui perangkat filosofis (reasoning/akal). Barulah kemudian sebuah realitas dapat diketahui/pahami.
Karena objek fisik adalah bahan amatan manusia, sekaligus asal muasalnya dari sesuatu yang immateri, maka ia menjadi realitas paling rendah dalam ontologi wujud. Namun demikian, ia juga sangat penting untuk dikuasai. Sebab, banyak bagian keduniaan/peradaban manusia (i.e., teknologi) lahir dari pengamatan dan percobaan pada berbagai wujud alam fisika. Tapi, untuk sampai ke Tuhan (untuk pulang ke rumah kita yang asli), tetap harus menguasai teknologi metafisika. Semua unsur atom akan tertinggal di bumi. Hanya Ruh yang akan kembali. Inilah juga peran nabi dan para wali, memastikan kita punya metodologi untuk “kembali”.
Empat, ontologi teks. Adalah realitas teks. Dalam pengetahuan, ini hanya berfungsi sebagai informasi. Quran misalnya, itu teks (kitabi, kumpulan teori/argumentasi). Nilainya tentu sangat suci, karena berasal dari Ilahi. Teks tidak membuktikan apapun selain hanya sebagai berita. Makanya para nabi disebut sebagai “penyampai berita”. Untuk dapat dibuktikan kebenaran teks secara aktual, maka dibutuhkan alat lain seperti akal, indera dan ruh. Sehingga teks dapat dikonfirmasi lagi kebenaran (atau mungkin juga kepalsuannya). Allah misalnya, itu dalam Qur’an diinformasikan bahwa Dia benar ada. Maka akal bisa bekerja untuk membuktikan bahwa dia secara rasional ada. Ruh juga begitu, bisa bekerja secara iluminatif melalui proses mikraj ruhani untuk bisa bertemu dengan sosok yang tertulis dalam teks. Sehingga Allah itu dapat dikonfirmasi keberadaan realitasnya secara Dzati. Sedangkan secara inderawi, usaha mengobservasi realitas Tuhan bisa saja dilakukan. Tapi tidak akan sampai ke realitas hakiki, karena wujud dan level kekasatan ontologinya beda. Indera hanya mampu menangkap gejala atau “tanda-tanda” keberadaan-Nya saja.
Menghidupkan Kembali Spiritual Science (Riset Metafisika)
Seribu tahun setelah masa kegelapan (abad 5-15 M), serta tertipu oleh ajaran agama yang tidak lagi ilmiah, bangsa Eropa akhirnya memutuskan untuk melakukan migrasi besar-besaran ke mazhab sekuler (ateis).
Bagaimana dengan dunia muslim, sudah berapa lama pintu ijtihad di tutup, serta akses untuk menjangkau Tuhan dilarang? Tinggal hitung, kalau sudah sampai 1000 tahun, khawatir kita umat Islam akan melakukan hal serupa. Pemberontakan pasti akan terjadi. Sebutlah pintu ijtihad sudah ditutup sejak pertengahan abad 9. Sekarang sudah abad 20. Artinya, sudah 1000 tahun. Kalau kita lihat, gejala dan gelombang ateisme dan sekularisme di tengah kita sebenarnya sudah cukup kuat. Mungkin masih-malu-malu saja mengakuinya.
Mungkin ijtihad untuk bidang hukum agama (syariat) sudah memadai. Dalilnya sudah melimpah. Tapi, pengalaman sufistik untuk merasakan kehadiran Allah adalah sesuatu yang penting. Agama itu pengalaman (experiencing sector). Apa yang dialami Nabi secara spiritual, idealnya juga dialami umatnya. Kalau nabi dan para walinya bisa mengobservasi dan merasakan kedekatan dengan wujud Tuhannya, maka kita juga harus bisa. Jika tidak, agama tidak lagi ilmiah. Agama telah berubah menjadi mitos. Sesuatu yang tidak bisa diulangi dan replika, itu tidak ilmiah. Agama adalah sesuatu yang seharusnya universal, pengalaman spiritual yang bisa dialami dan ulangi di setiap zaman dan tempat. Jika perjumpaan dengan Allah merupakan sesuatu yang sering terjadi di masa lalu, dimasa kini harusnya juga bisa, jika metodologinya serupa.
Disinilah letak challenge. Ateis atau tidak seseorang, mampu atau tidak ia mengakses Tuhan yang metafisis, itu tergantung pada penguasaan metodologi. Yang jelas, metodologi riset alam fisika tidak bisa dibawa ke ranah metafisik. Sebab, wujud ontologi yang coba diserap jauh berbeda. Mata inderawi juga tidak memungkinkan menangkap Wajah-Nya. Sebab, dia tidak ada dalam dimensi ruang dan waktu sebagaimana objek-objek fisika. Maka dibutuhkan bantuan “mata mikroskopis” lainnya (Ruh) untuk menjangkau Dia. Ruh merupakan elemen iluminatif yang punya potensi untuk mampu mengobservasi dan merasakan kehadiran Dzat Allah. Metode perjalanan Ruh inilah yang perlu didalami kembali lewat para guru yang masih menyimpan metodologi sains spiritual ini. Langka orangnya. Tapi ada.
Allah itu “gaib”. Iya, itu perspektif fisika. Apa maksud “gaib”, atau kenapa disebut “gaib”? “Gaib” adalah ontologi metafisis. Gaib adalah sesuatu yang tidak dapat diakses oleh mata fisis (inderawi). Tapi dapat diakses oleh mata atau bentuk-bentuk kesadaran yang lebih tinggi. Bagi nabi, Tuhan tidak gaib. Sudah pernah dijumpainya. Jadi, gaib bukanlah sesuatu yang total tidak dapat ditemui atau jumpai. Melainkan sesuatu yang butuh usaha atau metodologi khusus untuk mendekatinya. Segala sesuatu memang “gaib”, sebelum diriset. Setelah diriset, ditemukan jawaban dan wujudnya, tentu tidak gaib lagi. Agama “gaib” adalah agama untuk orang awam. Untuk orang cerdas dan dewasa, yang telah melakukan pencarian, seharusnya tidak gaib lagi.
